Every two years the City of Medicine Hat gives recognition to selected individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to the community, and who by their dedication, activities and/or accomplishments have enhanced the quality of life in Medicine Hat. The awards are presented to the recipients by the Mayor at an Awards Ceremony.

The City of Medicine Hat may grant awards to individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution in the following categories:

a) CULTURAL

• For an amateur or professional who has achieved renown in a Provincial, Canadian and/or International artistic/cultural event.
• For an individual who has made a major contribution to cultural development in a volunteer or professional capacity and has displayed extraordinary dedication in their commitment to this development.

b) ENVIRONMENTAL

• For an individual who has made a major contribution towards the preservation, restoration or enhancement of our natural environment, which has contributed to an increased quality of life in Medicine Hat.

c) HUMANITARIAN

• For an individual who has made a major contribution to public service and has displayed extraordinary dedication in their commitment to humanitarian efforts.

d) SPORTS/RECREATIONAL

• For an amateur or professional who has competed in a Provincial, Canadian, and/or International sport competition and who has placed first, second, or third in that competition.
• For an individual that has made a major contribution to sport/recreation development in a volunteer or professional capacity and has displayed extraordinary dedication in their commitment to this development.

e) COMMUNITY INCLUSION

• For an individual, organization or business that has made a major contribution to accessibility and/or community inclusion in the areas of physical accessibility, employment opportunities, educational opportunities and other related areas.

f) COMMUNITY SERVICE

• As deemed appropriate by City Council, for individuals that have made a major contribution in more than one category and who have contributed to community sustainability through leadership in social, economic and/or urban development.
