The Medicine Hat Fire Service recruits applicants who have successfully completed level one and two National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 program. Other NFPA electives such as NFPA 1031 level 1 inspector, NFPA 472 hazardous materials awareness, operations and or Tech training, EMR or EMT training, SCUBA and PADI open water as well as diving experience, and technical rope skills are considered relevant applicant assets. Applicants must also have completed Grade 12, and must provide a copy of their drivers abstract as well as a copy of a current criminal records statement. Minimum class 3Q driver’s license required with a good driving record.
The recruitment program comprises a series of evaluative measures:
- A grading of the applicant’s resume to determine relevant skills, qualifications and experience.
- Subsequent invitation to attend recruitment.
- Written occupational aptitude test pass mark to be determined by adjudicator.
- Successfully demonstrating physical dexterity, stamina and strength relevant to the physical demands of the fire fighter occupation.
- Satisfactory performance in a technical interview conducted by fire suppression and fire prevention officers.
- Satisfactory performance in a Fire Chief’s interview process that addresses individual character attributes and suitability to perform as a team member.
The recruitment process evaluates and grades applicants on a pro-rated scoring system which involves awarding weighted performance grades for each segment of the recruitment process.
The City of Medicine Hat Human Resources department advertises for applicants through the
City of Medicine Hat web site, the local newspaper and at least one of the major Alberta City
newspapers such as the Calgary Herald and/or the Edmonton Journal. Instructions for applicants
and application deadlines are stipulated through the various media channels.
