Electrical permits ensure that electrical systems are installed correctly and comply with the Canadian Electrical Code. A qualified electrician licensed by the City of Medicine Hat must submit the electrical permit application, unless the work is done under a Homeowner's Permit.

Homeowner's Permit:
As a homeowner, you are entitled to apply for a homeowner's permit if:
- You own and reside at the premise to be wired, or in the case of a home under construction, you will reside in the premise, and
- You will personally be installing the wiring, and
- You are capable of ensuring the work will be done in accordance with the applicable safety regulations.
You may not apply for a Homeowner's Electrical Permit if:
- You do not own and reside at the premises to be wired, or
- You are not personally installing the wiring, or
- The installation requires other than standard wiring materials, or
- The system is over 100 amperes in capacity, or
- A three phase system, or
- Over 150 volts to ground, or
- The work involves a hot tub and/or swimming pool.
If you have no previous knowledge or experience with electrical wiring, it would be in your best interest to hire an electrical contractor who is eligible to receive permits. Work completed by inexperienced individuals often requires extensive corrections to bring the installation up to code, and may create a serious hazard.
Expiration of Permit:
An electrical permit expires if the work is not commenced within 180 days of the issuance of the permit or if no work is carried out under the permit for a period of 180 consecutive days. Upon written application made prior to the expiry of the permit, the manager may extend the time period for a permit by an additional 180 days.
A person may apply for a refund of an electrical permit (other than annual maintenance permits) if no work has been carried out under the permit and the application for a refund is made within 90 days of the permit issuance. The repayable portion of the fees shall be the original amount less 20% or the minimum permit fee (whichever is greater).
