Electric Utility

The City of Medicine Hat Electric Utility began generating electricity in 1910 using diesel fuel. Today, the Power Plant uses co-generation turbines with natural gas and steam to produce electricity for its customers. The Electric Utility delivers electricity to approximately 25,000 customers within its service area.

The City of Medicine Hat Electric Utility generates, transmits and distributes electricity to all customers within the City of Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore, Veinerville and outlying rural areas adjacent to the city. While the Electric Utility buys and sells electricity via a physical connection to the Alberta Transmission System, we are not part of the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System. Although customer choice is part of our future vision, we are not currently affected by deregulation in the industry affecting customer choice or rights to electric generation.

The Electric Utility owns, operates, and maintains radio and fibre communication systems to provide communication service to City operated departments.

Our electric rates are the lowest or among the lowest in Alberta. Our system reliability performance is in the upper 25 per cent of urban utilities in Canada.

We provide a suite of customer services including:
