The waste will be collected from the carts using a special truck equipped with a mechanical arm that automatically picks up the carts, empties them and then returns the cart to the original position.
This automated system of solid waste collection has been used successfully in many different municipalities throughout North America. This new system will result in significant positive changes to our present system.
The new system is scheduled to be phased-in starting in 2007 and will be fully operational throughout the City within the next few years.
Every household will receive a new garbage cart. These carts will replace garbage cans currently in use by residents. Redundant garbage containers can be recycled or used to store and transport your household recyclables to the recycling depots and information on managing household waste will be provided.
How will the new carts be distributed?
Distribution will occur throughout the city during the month of September 2009. All carts are being delivered to the front street to verify addresses and should be moved to your waste collection set out location for collection. Please start using the cart immediately upon receipt. For more information please refer to the following Automated Waste Collection .
Who will own the carts?
The carts are the property of City and will be replaced at the end of their life cycle. Each residence in the Medicine Hat will be assigned a cart and a serial number on the cart will be used to identify the property it is assigned to. If you move, the carts must remain with the property for the next resident to use.
Who is responsible for the maintenance of the carts?
Residents will be responsible for routine maintenance such as keeping the carts clean, removing the carts from the street or lane after collection and storing the carts in a safe place. Carts requiring repairs will be serviced by the Solid Waste Department. Any carts that are stolen, or damaged through neglect or misuse, will be replaced at the property owners’ expense.
Where should I store the cart?
Material placed in the carts should be bagged. This will keep the carts and contents odour free, so residents may store the carts wherever it is convenient. On collection day, the resident must wheel the cart to the street or lane for collection. The carts have large wheels that make them easy to roll, even over curbs, gravel and snow.
Where will I put my cart for collection?
The placement of the carts is very important during the collection process. Carts are to be placed on the street with the wheels against the curb, or in the lane just off the traveled portion of the roadway. Leave at least a 1 metre (3 feet) of space between your cart and any obstacles like cars, poles, fences, etc. Do not overfill the cart. The new carts are oversized so if you have more garbage than the cart will hold you will either have to take the extra to the landfill or hold the surplus garbage until the following week. Leave the lid in the closed position.
