Project Description
The Automated Metering project will exchange electric, water and gas meters for all City of Medicine Hat utility customers.

The new meters allow the City to perform meter reads automatically, eliminating the need to access your property every month to read your meter, while also ensuring accurate billing every month (no more estimated reads).

Project Timelines
  • Electric meter installations begin June 20, 2013 and are expected to be completed in about 15 months.
  • Gas meter installations begin late summer 2013 and are expected to be completed in about 15 months.
  • Gas Utility has a meter change program that requires Measurement Canada exchanges and will continue into 2015.
  • Water meter installations begin late summer 2013 and are expected to be completed in about 15 months.

Privacy
The privacy of City of Medicine Hat utility customers is a priority.  The automated metering program collects consumption information related solely to the amount of electricity, gas and water being used. It does not specifically measure any devices in the home.  The information is transmitted wirelessly to one of seven communication towers scattered throughout the utilities’ service area. The signal is transmitted using an encrypted signal on a licensed frequency.
