After more than two and a half years, the City of Medicine Hat is nearing completion of its project to install automated meters for all electric, gas and water utility customers. Medicine Hat is the first municipality to combine water, gas and electrical utility metering into one collections system. To date, 80,521 meters have been installed and the project has 99.4% compliance. Data collected since 2014 shows benefits of automated meters are already being realized. Fewer than 500 non-compliant locations remain.
60-day final notice letters are being mailed to the remaining non-compliant customers. Customers who have not yet had all three automated meters installed must call and schedule an appointment for installation by July 22 or risk disconnection of electric services Once that step is complete, they will immediately be removed from the disconnect list.
The information below describes the project and answers many common questions about automated meters.
