Mayor Ted Clugston
In 1967, newlyweds Dr. Keith and Sharon Clugston relocated to Medicine Hat because of the low taxes, low utility costs and the lowest provincial taxes. Today, Mayor Clugston credits his father Keith's lifelong dedication and sense of duty to his patients as an outstanding example for him and his brothers to follow in ensuring Medicine Hat continues to be a community of choice.
Born and raised in Medicine Hat, Mayor Clugston graduated from the University of Calgary as Biological Sciences Major and returned to the Gas City in 1991. He eventually served two terms as an Alderman and was a Council representative on every major City Standing Committee before being elected Mayor in October 2013.
With a holistic approach to leading the municipality and it's multi-million dollar energy division, Mayor Clugston's priorities include building consensus with fellow members of council and connecting with residents on a regular basis. Some of the areas that Mayor Clugston is focusing on include:
- Economic development and growth
- Continued diversification of the Energy portfolio
- Canada's first solar thermal steam generation electric plant
- Industrial expansion
- Development for 603 First Street
- Flood mitigation measures
- Increased recreation & entertainment opportunities
Currently a member of the Kinsmen Club as well as a board member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization and a financial planner by trade, Mayor Clugston is married to Nita and has two sons, Kyle and Ashton. His hobbies include walking, golfing, collecting and restoring old pinball machines.
