Heritage Resources Inventory

The Heritage Resources Inventory is a list of properties that are deemed by the City of Medicine Hat to have architectural, heritage or cultural value and thereby merit preservation.  The Inventory is established to enable Council to review and monitor proposed changes to properties with heritage value.  It also exists to give property owners fair notice that the heritage status of their buildings may affect future development options for their properties.  Finally, it is a collection of research on our historical resources that is available to the community.

The Heritage Resources Committee continues to work on a Places of Interest List that will support the continual and ongoing development of a Heritage Resources Inventory.  This process will determine what buildings, landscapes and structures are determined to be of significance in our city and therefore a part of the Heritage Resources Inventory.

Through cost-shared funding that was provided by the Alberta Lottery Fund, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation and the City of Medicine Hat, over 50 resources have been evaluated to date by heritage consultants in conjunction with the Heritage Resources Committee and city staff.

The evaluation process included the preparation of one of each of the following:

These provided direction for the heritage program and link the historic resources in the community to themes that have evolved as a part of the city's development patterns over time.  The development of the themes and associated historic resources evaluations were guided by the Heritage Resources Committee and city staff and vetted through the community during various Open Houses.

Presentation and Story boards from the various open houses may be found at the following links:

The following Historic Resources Inventory includes resources evaluated through the Historic Inventory Project, as well as resources evaluated for the Parks Canada Canadian Register of Historic Places and the Alberta Register of Historic Places.

Note regarding naming convention for residences:  the procedure used by the Heritage Resources Committee is to use a hybrid name for a residence composed of the first owner and the owner at the time of evaluation.  However, in the event of a designation by a subsequent owner, the name on the designation would use that owner's name as the second component.

City Council Presentations

As part of the requirement for the cost shared agreement for the Historic Inventory project, the Heritage Resources Committee presented the results of each phase to City Council.  Following are the presentations made to date:
