So Far

For a year the City Land Use Bylaw Team and Meridian Planning, the prime planning consultant, worked together on a draft of the new Land Use Bylaw (LUB). In June of 2012, the first draft of the new Land Use Bylaw was taken to a series of stakeholder meetings, public open houses and special group meetings. Working sessions included meetings with sign companies.
Community input was extensive and two areas were highlighted as the main areas of concern: Signs and parking of recreational vehicles in residential areas. Click below to see a summary of those comments.

Draft Land Use Bylaw Engagement Summary - June 2012

We listened

A new philosophy was put in place to provide guidance in the drafting of the next draft Bylaw. This philosophy says:

The Bylaw needs to be easily understood by the lay person.

- All districts must have permitted uses

- The number of discretionary uses will be limited and the number of permitted uses increased

- Few if any uses will be “discretionary MPC”

- Lot and development standards will be imbedded in every District

- As much as possible the Bylaw will be simplified

- Subjective considerations will not be predominant

In keeping with this philosophy, stakeholder working sessions with “rough” sections of a next version of the Land Use Bylaw were held in January 2013. At these sessions people were asked to provide direct input to the “work in progress”.

What are we doing now?

Now we are working to write a new draft of the Land Use Bylaw, taking into account what we heard from the residents of Medicine Hat. This version will be even more accessible, easy for everyone to read, understand and work with.
Please keep in mind the draft document you see below is a work in progress. Once you have looked at it, please feel free to send us any and all comments, suggestions and ideas. We need to know what you think of this draft of the Land Use Bylaw.
