General Manager – Natural Gas & Petroleum Resources

The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a General Manager for its Natural Gas and Petroleum Resources Department. Functioning as an industry-equivalent COO, not only will you be responsible for the day to day function of the department but also for setting the strategic direction and ensuring collective results are achieved. This position is unique in that the oil and gas function is part of a municipal governing structure to a vibrant and growing community of 65,000 people based in southeastern Alberta with a rapidly expanding business and industry sector. Reporting to the Commissioner of Energy and Utilities, this position is part of the greater leadership team for the organization and includes significant interactions with our political leaders.

As our ideal candidate, you have a strong multi-disciplinary background with leadership experience as a team leader and/or COO in your career progression. You have demonstrated strong knowledge of geoscience, petroleum engineering, surface and mineral land as well as with the financial side of the business. You remain current on evolving environmental, regulatory and social issues as it pertains to oil and gas in Canada. Facing significant industry headwinds you are innovative and creative in your approach to the business and bring a strong entrepreneurial spirit and drive to your daily work. You have excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to present to large groups of stakeholders and deliver on camera interviews. You highly value your employees and believe in a fair and progressive workplace while driving top tier performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University in Business, Engineering, Geology or related field.
  • Fifteen (15) years’ of directly related experience in the oil and gas industry, with a strong background in all disciplines, including five (5) years in a senior management capacity.
  • Advanced business training considered an asset
  • Possession of ability to possess a valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • A management approved combination of equivalent education, training and experience may be considered
