Now Hiring Gas Distribution Utility Worker II

Job DescriptionThe City of Medicine Hat Gas Distribution department provides reliable and safe delivery of natural gas to its 26,000 customers. We are currently looking to fill an intermediate level skilled labourer position to perform the necessary tasks required for the operation, repair, maintenance and construction of gas distribution facilities under routine and emergency situations. The duties of this position include maintenance activities assisting with gas mains /services installations, assisting with repairs and tie-ins on pressurized gas piping, responding to emergency hit lines, assisting routine and emergency stopping and squeezing procedures, operating construction equipment including excavating and trenching, valve inspection and maintenance, as well as assisting in gas turn-offs and re-lighting appliances, meter set fabrication, cathodic protection installations, stations maintenance, and more.

If you enjoy working in a team environment, are proficient in the use of computer programs, and have strong communication skills, we want to hear from you! Working knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of a gas distribution system, as well the occupational hazards associated with the construction and maintenance of gas distribution facilities is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency diploma;
  • Minimum of two (2) years relevant, recent experience in gas pipeline maintenance or in construction work of a nature acceptable to Gas Utility management;
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Vehicle Operator’s License;
  • Hold a valid or be prepared to obtain an Alberta Polyfusion Certificate;
  • Must maintain valid First Aid, WHMIS and CPR Certificates and successfully complete the City's Defensive Driving Course.
  • A management approved equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work on-call on a rotational basis.

This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen.
