South Railway Street Construction - Downtown Update
Work to complete a new water main will put the project ahead of schedule
Medicine Hat - The second stage of South Railway Street construction in the Downtown area is making good progress. Work is on schedule with Stage 2 completion anticipated in mid-July (weather permitting).
Starting Monday, June 19, the City will be extending the Stage 2 construction in front of the Transit Terminal entrance on South Railway Street. This will have a positive impact on 3rd and 4th Street businesses, as crews will be able to completely switch them over to a new water main. It will also put the project approximately one week ahead of schedule, and speed up construction once Stage 3 begins.
Most of the deep utilities for Stage 2 are completed, including water, sanitary and storm mains with their related services. Construction crews are also continuing with surface works including subbase and subgrade preparations, curb and gutters and sidewalk concrete. By completion of Stage 2, the 3rd Street intersection will be opened and the 4th Street intersection will be closed to start Stage 3 of construction.
Please note that as a result of this project extension, street parking will not be available in the area adjacent to the Transit Terminal South Railway entrance starting on June 19. Traffic accommodation plans and detour signs are in place to assist the commuters passing through this area safely. We remind everyone to obey all traffic signs and to drive safely around work crews. More details and maps can be found on the City website: medicinehat.ca/southrailway.
Businesses are open throughout construction in this area and the access to the east parking lots will be maintained. Thank you to everyone for your support and patience as we undertake this important project.
