New Electric Generation Facility Preparing for Commissioning and Grand Opening
Routine gas flaring begins today, to clean and prepare lines
Medicine Hat – The City’s new Electric Generation Facility known as Unit 16 will begin operating this fall, following over a year of steady construction. As part of the preparations, gas flaring will begin on Friday, September 1 and continue during the week of September 5, to clean and prepare the lines. This is a safe, routine operation that is closely monitored.
Flaring will occur on the following days:
Friday, September 1, approximately 11 a.m.
Small flare stack lasting approximately one hour. This flare may not be visible from a distance.
Tuesday, September 5
30 metre flare stack will begin and may continue for several days until completed by Friday, pending weather and unforeseen delays.
This facility will ensure enough generation for the entire service area, even if the City’s largest generating unit goes offline. Sod-turning occurred in June, 2016. The approved project cost was $66 million, however the project is anticipated to be completed under budget.
The City of Medicine Hat looks forward to full operations this fall. Commissioning of this new facility and a Grand Opening are planned for late September and early October.
