City’s First Hearing Loop

Medicine Hat Public Library Theatre

Post Date:12/06/2017 9:42 AM

Medicine Hat – The newly renovated theatre in the Medicine Hat Public Library now includes the City’s first hearing loop. Residents with hearing issues, agencies and local audiologists, hearing aid practitioners and members of the public are welcome to attend and hear the difference Thursday, December 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

“Hearing loss increases significantly as we age,” says Leslie Jerry, Community Inclusion Coordinator with the City of Medicine Hat.  “When people aren’t able to hear well it is not uncommon to see them start to withdraw from social situations.”  The hearing loop in the Library Theatre provides barrier-free support for those with T-coil enabled hearing aids by cutting down on the reverberations and background noise commonly experienced in a theatre setting by hearing aid wearers. The hearing loop also works well for patrons with loop listeners.

During the event, staff will be on-hand to show patrons how to connect their hearing aid to the loop and to loan out headsets for those without hearing aids.  Snacks and refreshments will be served. The movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus” will follow at 1:30 p.m., giving guests the chance to try the loop during the full movie experience.
