Final Demolition of Hitch'n' Post Oct 5-7

All public safety and environmental regulations in place throughout the project

Post Date:10/04/2018 10:20 AM

Medicine Hat – The building at 210 South Railway Street known as the Hitch’n’ Post is scheduled for demolition beginning tomorrow, October 5 and will come down in stages over three days.

People may watch the demolition process as long as they remain safely behind all barricades. The sidewalk in front of the building remains closed and there will be minimal disruption to traffic. Pedestrians and drivers in the area are reminded to obey all signage in place.

The City of Medicine Hat has been working with adjacent and nearby businesses that will be temporarily closed during this phase. Their cooperation and understanding is appreciated.

The City of Medicine Hat and the Orphan Well Association (OWA) formed an agreement last winter to work together on this project in the interest of public health and safety. All public safety and environmental regulations will be followed, including continual monitoring of methane levels. Work crews will also wear personal monitors during the demolition work.

The building will be well ventilated and highly sensitive equipment will be used to monitor methane levels throughout the demolition. Methane is non-toxic and dissipates readily when exposed to the air. The next step, Phase 3, will see the OWA install an enhanced Soil Gas Management System to manage the methane associated with the old well into the future.
