Free 2-hour parking in East Section of Cottonwood Lot 1st St SE

In effect until January 31, use of lot will add to parking choices in the downtown over the holidays

Medicine Hat – Starting today, the City of Medicine Hat is re-implementing temporary, 2-hour free customer parking on the east side of the Cottonwood Lot (603 First Street SE).  This change will remain in effect until January 31, 2019.  New signage will be in place today at the Lot’s east entrance noting the change for 28 parking stalls.

The City notes that this change is in response to downtown merchant concerns. “We want downtown merchants to know that the City keeps downtown redevelopment as one of its strategic priorities and greatly values the feedback from the business community,” notes Grant MacKay, Manager of the City’s Land and Business Support department

The City provided the City Centre Development Agency with information regarding changes in parking on the Cottonwood lot, to share with its members in early November. The action to re-implement the lot for free customer parking over the holidays follows the level of concerns heard over the past day.  “In an effort to address the concerns expressed this week about available customer parking, the City will re-institute 2-hour free customer parking at the Cottonwood lot until the end of January,” MacKay added.

Business owners and downtown patrons are reminded of free 2-hour customer on-street parking in the downtown, in addition to the Cottonwood lot temporary free parking.  Downtown patrons can also make use of 10 designated spots for 4-hour free parking on the third floor of the Transit Terminal Parkade.

“The Downtown continues to evolve and develop and the recent sale of the Chokecherry Lot will facilitate added growth and economic activity in the city centre,” says MacKay. “However, as a result the overall downtown parking landscape will also be changing, including the availability of free off-street options.”
