Tips to Protect Your Water Supply from Freezing

Avoid Frozen Water Lines

Post Date:02/25/2019 10:14 AM

Medicine Hat – With the cold weather we are experiencing, the City’s Environmental Utilities department is responding to an increased number of reports of frozen water and sewer services. Below are tips for residents and business owners to protect your water supply:

• Leave a tap running with a flow of about the width of a pencil. This is most effective and economical way to reduce the risk of freezing.

• Continue taking this precaution as temperatures fluctuate. The risk of a frozen water service increases when frost is pushed further into the ground.

• The utility cost of running a tap to prevent freezing works out to approximately $15 in total for the timeframe of November 1 to April 30.

Water consumption charges, as recorded by the water meter, will continue to apply without adjustment in accordance with the Water Service Bylaw.
