Extensive Upgrades Planned for Strathcona Centre

Post Date:05/01/2019 1:00 PM

Medicine Hat – The Strathcona Centre will undergo a major renovation beginning this summer.

The project encompasses the replacement of important components which have reached their end of lifecycle, including the roofing system, HVAC equipment and fire alarm components.

The building will be given new siding and a new roof. Additionally, a new entryway with barrier-free access will better accommodate members with mobility aids.

“This is the first major rehabilitation project at Strathcona Centre since it was opened in 1979,” said Scott Woodside, facilities project coordinator. “While some cosmetic upgrades were done last year as part of the Seniors Centre Development Project, this work is critical to maintain the integrity of the building.”

In 2018, the facility saw $225,000 in upgrades, including electrical work, renovations to washroom facilities and some new paint, lighting and carpet. Funding for the upcoming work was approved as part of the City’s 2019 budget.

“We offer many different programs and services for our members, including the fitness centre, fitness and dance classes and drop-in activities such as floor curling, pickleball and table tennis,” said Leah Prestayko, General Manager of Community Development. “An updated heating and cooling system will ensure everyone is able to participate in a comfortable and enjoyable environment.”

The first phase of construction is expected to begin on the exterior of the building in July after the Alberta 55 plus 2019 Summer Provincial Games.

In order to best accommodate construction crews, and have the work completed safely and as quickly as possible, the Strathcona Centre will close on September 2, 2019.

“Residents will have access to the full facility, pool and change rooms throughout the summer,” Woodside said. “Once the pool is closed for the season, construction will move inside and we can tackle several projects at once to shorten the construction period required.”

Fitness centre members of the Strathcona Centre will have their memberships honoured at the Crestwood Recreation Centre during the closure.

The Strathcona Centre will reopen on December 2, 2019.
