Removal Planned for Over-Mature Trees at Kiwanis Central Park

Post Date:05/07/2019 4:21 PM

Medicine Hat – On Wednesday, May 8, three large poplar trees will be removed from Kiwanis Central Park. The trees have deteriorated and are considered to be over-mature. Due to these factors, and the location, their removal is necessary to help ensure public safety.

The three trees scheduled to be removed are near the whale slide. In order to have the work completed as safely and quickly as possible, the slide and play structure will be closed to the public on Wednesday.

A fourth tree near the basketball court was previously identified and has also been removed.

β€œIn the case where a tree has deteriorated in health, or has become over-mature, there is the potential for a tree incident, including loss of limbs, branches, and in the worst case, a structural failure which could cause a falling hazard to occur,” said Dave Genio, Superintendent of Parks Maintenance.

The Parks and Recreation department will replant a variety of trees in these areas within the 2019 operating season.

The City takes the safety of its residents very seriously and only remove a tree if it becomes a safety concern. Full investigations into the need for any tree removal are completed prior to any work beginning.

The City of Medicine Hat thanks the public for their patience and understanding while the project is completed.
