Young Artists Poster Competition Aims at Road Safety
Aspiring artists aged 5 to 18 can enter to win in four age categories from kids to teens
Medicine Hat – The City is seeking young artists with creativity and passion to submit posters that make roads safer! This poster contest focuses on road safety just in time for summer vacation. Children and teens are invited to submit their entries by June 14. Winning submissions will receive a $100 gift card and will see their posters used to inspire people to obey the rules and keep everyone safe during the summer holidays.
“A picture is worth a thousand words,” says Craig Maunder, an engineer with the City of Medicine Hat. “We would love to see some fun, colourful and creative posters that remind people to obey the rules of the road.”
The City’s year-long Road Safety Campaign focuses on the slogan ‘Safety is a shared responsibility.’ Whether driving, riding a bike or walking, knowing the basic safety rules is important.
“Parents should make sure children understand the rules around crosswalks, cycling and school or playground zones. However, parents can also be reminded about safety by their children,” notes Maunder. “One of the goals of this poster competition is for kids and teens to come up with a message they want to share. The message can be aimed at other kids, with their teen peer group or with adults. On the topic of road safety, we expect to see fun and colourful entries, as well as some dramatic and hard-hitting posters on this important topic.”
Entries in each age group will be judged according to:
- Creativity, fun, colour or drama of the poster
- Artwork that illustrates the message or theme
This contest is open to residents of Medicine Hat as well as nearby surrounding communities. Posters and official entry forms are being distributed to local schools and recreation centres. Aspiring artists of all ages are encouraged to choose a theme listed on the posters, or come up with your own special message to promote road safety.
The deadline for entries is June 14, 2019. For more information, rules and the official entry form please visit medicinehat.ca/roadsafety. Entry forms will also be available at the City’s Municipal Works Office on Kipling Street SE, at the Family Leisure Centre (FLC) and in the City Hall lobby.
