Saamis Tepee site to Close Temporarily for Annual Inspection

Post Date:06/24/2019 10:18 AM

Medicine Hat – The Saamis Tepee site will be temporarily closed on Tuesday, June 25, in order for the City to conduct its annual inspection of the structure. The work will commence at 6:00 a.m. and will be completed by 2:00 p.m. that day, weather permitting. During this time period, lamp replacement will also be completed.

“Safety of residents and visitors to the site is our first priority,” said Carrie Wall, with Community Development. “We look forward to reopening the site as soon as the inspection is complete.”

The temporary closure includes the area directly under and around the tepee. The parking lot at the tepee site and the trails will remain open. The Visitor Information Centre, including the picnic and playground area and the sanitary dumping station, are also open.

Originally constructed for the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics, the Saamis Tepee is a tribute to Canada’s native heritage. Built entirely of steel with a concrete foundation, the tepee is ringed with 10 large circular story-boards depicting aspects of native culture and history.
