Popular Power Down Challenge Returns

Reduce energy consumption for month of August to win

Post Date:07/08/2019 11:30 AM

Medicine Hat – The popular Power Down Challenge returns again this summer, and the City is challenging residents to beat last years incredible results.

“Residents really embraced this contest last summer, with a total entry of 349 households and an average energy reduction of 22%,” says Jass Baidwan, Environmental Sustainability Officer with the City. “We are hoping for even more participation this year, and we are adding extra incentive by doubling chances to win if you challenge family members, friends or neighbours to sign up.”

To qualify for the prizes, households are encouraged to reduce energy consumption by 5% or more for the month of August – as compared to their consumption in August 2018. Last years top three winners reduced their power by almost 80% by following tips to save energy – plus saved money on utility bills.

A grand prize of a $500 City gift card will be awarded to the household with the greatest energy reduction, with additional prizes for second and third place, along with a random draw from all entries for City gift cards. There is also a $100 prize for the person with the most referrals this year, to spread the word about the contest. The contest will run from August 1 – 31, 2019, with entries accepted until August 31. For more information and to sign up visit www.hatsmart.ca/powerdown

“This contest is a great way of raising awareness about ways to save energy and to save money on utility bills,” adds Baidwan. “We encourage people to track their current and past energy usage through eUtility and to practice the energy saving tips we will be sharing throughout the contest via social media, on the City’s website, and in local advertising.”

The total energy reduction last year was almost 82,000 kWh, which is the equivalent of taking eight cars off the road for one year, or the annual energy consumption of ten houses.

This is a voluntary energy reduction challenge open to residents of the City of Medicine Hat, Redcliff and Cypress County who receive an Electric Utility Statement form the City and have lived in their dwelling for at least one year as of August 1, 2018.
