Susan Shantz – Currents: river works-in-progress in the Ewart Duggan House
JULY 12, 2019 - JULY 13, 2019
Medicine Hat is situated on the South Saskatchewan River between its major tributaries: the Bow Oldman and Red Deer. I live along the same river in Saskatoon and have visited the Saskatchewan River Delta, the downstream end-point of the river. While I experience the river near my home as a natural phenomenon and place of beauty, after learning more about the river from scientific and environmental perspectives, I have come to realize it is a highly-managed water source. It sustains us, but with a cost for those downstream. Drawing on field trips to sites along the river, I use a variety media (from textiles to videography) to consider the currents that connect us in this prairie water basin. – Susan Shantz, 2019
On Friday July 12 from 7-9 PM enjoy this residency exhibition in the Ewart Duggan House during the Downtown Art Walk. Susan will be in the House to meet with visitors.
On Saturday July 13 at 10:30 AM, following Jasmine Keillor’s curatorial tour of Terrestrial Beings in the Art Gallery, Susan Shantz will lead visitors on a tour of Currents: river works-in-progress in the Ewart Duggan House. No registration is required and admission is free.

At once sublimely elegant and ruthlessly daunting, the lush intricacies of the natural world have delighted, nourished, intrigued and wrought havoc upon the human race since time immemorial. Occupying a place between reality, dream, memory and myth, Terrestrial Beings presents strange and wonderful works in which representations of the body and the land intersect physically, psychologically and metaphorically. Through sculpture, painting, drawing, and cut-paper, twelve contemporary artists from across the country embrace their connection to the earth as fertile ground for deeper spiritual and intellectual exploration.
On July 13 at 10:30 AM Jasmine Keillor will lead a curatorial tour of Terrestrial Beings in the Art Gallery with artist Marigold Santos present to discuss her work. Following this tour, Susan Shantz will lead visitors on a tour of Currents: river works-in-progress in the Ewart Duggan House. No registration is required and admission is free.

The Hat Art Club celebrates 73 amazing years of the development of members’ own artistic skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, and many other media, as well as helping the visual arts to thrive in Medicine Hat.
