Work on City Hall Parkade Roof Extended to Fall

Major upgrade has required extra work and materials for completion

Post Date:09/06/2019 2:39 PM

Medicine Hat – A major project to upgrade the parkade roof membrane at City Hall will extend into the fall to ensure successful completion before winter. Exterior evidence of the work has been seen around the City Hall plaza and clock tower this summer. While these form the roof of the parkade, the roof membrane and other work beneath the surface has formed a large part of the work.

The roof membrane which protects the structure and ensures adequate waterproofing and drainage has outlived its life expectancy. Once consultants began to remove material and cladding, they were more accurately assess the magnitude of work required. As can happen with any renovation, there have been some unexpected surprises related to drainage, underground pipes, and even delivery of special drains and materials to complete the project successfully. In addition, upgraded red brick and block work was needed. Once this work is completed, landscaping and restoration of the City Hall Plaza will follow.

As the work continues, we appreciate the patience of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists who have been obeying signs and detours over the past few months. Please continue to obey all signs until the work is completed. The City is committed to safety and to ensuring our aging assets and infrastructure are maintained and renewed. Once completed, everyone will benefit from a safe and dry public parkade, with a restored plaza to enjoy.
