Post Date:09/19/2019 9:46 AM

Medicine Hat – On Monday, September 23 work will begin on the next phase to replace aging water and sanitary sewer mains on 1st St SW. In order to carry out this work, 1st St SW will be open to local traffic only for approximately seven weeks, provided the weather cooperates.

This work is part of the 1st Street SW 2019 Upgrade Project, which includes replacement of water and sanitary sewer mains, replacement of damaged storm sewer catch basins, replacement of concrete curb and gutters where required, improvement of pedestrian sidewalks and rehabilitation of pavement surfaces. To ensure work is done more efficiently, several City departments are working together along this corridor and work has occurred in phases to minimize impacts along this corridor.

We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as the project has progressed over the past few months. We recognize that resident access is important. We are working diligently to reach project completion, which is anticipated for later this fall, barring any unforeseen complications.

1st Street SW Infrastructure Renewal Project

Posted on May 31, 2019

Several City departments are working together to improve and replace infrastructure along 1st Street SW between Division Avenue S and Chinook Drive SW. Working together will help coordinate timing, costs and efficiencies along this traffic corridor. Work crews are installing temporary water lines for residents prior to construction start on June 10. This work will require temporary road closures to ensure the safety of the workers.

The current work is related to work performed in 2018 when the City’s Gas department completed work on the north side of the street, relocating infrastructure to make room for additional utility upgrades. The work beginning on June 10 includes:

Environmental Utilities

  • Replacement of water and sanitary sewer mains

    Municipal Works

  • Rehabilitation of the pavement surface within the road right-of-way
  • Replacement of sections of curb and gutter, and of storm sewer catch basins and catch basin leads
  • Improvements to sidewalks where necessary including enhanced wheelchair ramps
  • Widening of the trail from 2nd Avenue SW to Chinook Drive SW

    Electric Distribution

  • Installation of conduits for future electrical upgrading

Once construction begins the work will be undertaken in phases to minimize inconvenience to residents and to those who use this traffic corridor. Please be aware of traffic accommodations and adjust your route accordingly. Construction will continue throughout the entire 2019 season.

We thank everyone for your patience as this Infrastructure Renewal project is completed. Please drive safely in the work zone to keep workers safe. For ongoing information about the project, please visit the City website at – What’s New > In the Works.
