Fire Services Reminding Residents to Plan and Practice a Safe Way Out
Fire Prevention Week runs October 6 to 12
Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Fire Services is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA) — the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years — to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe.
In Canada, most fire deaths occur in the home, where people believe they are most safe. Every year, Canadian fire departments respond to roughly 25,600 structure fires. In 2015, structure fires caused more than 1,400 injuries and nearly 200 deaths.
“These numbers show that house fires continue to pose a significant threat to safety,” said Curtis Noble, Fire Prevention Officer with Medicine Hat Fire Services. “In a typical house fire, you may have as little as one or two minutes to escape safely, from the time the smoke alarm goes off. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.”
Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday, October 6 to Saturday, October 12.
During the week, Medicine Hat Fire Services will be visiting schools and senior facilities, and offering presentations in support of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign. While the focus will be on getting out of your house quickly and safely, the same skills can apply to every building.
“Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” said Noble. “No matter where you are, you should always look for available exits. If the fire alarm sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”
