Roll the Clocks Back & Test Your Smoke Alarms This Weekend
Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Fire Services is reminding residents to test their smoke alarms while rolling the clocks back this weekend.
“We see firsthand that smoke alarms save lives,” said Curtis Noble, Fire Prevention Officer. “A working smoke alarm gives you and your loved ones more time to escape safely in the event of a fire.”
Fire Services recommends testing smoke alarms twice per year, changing the batteries regularly, and installing smoke alarms in each bedroom and on each floor of your home. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
In addition to having properly installed and working smoke alarms, it is important to have an emergency plan in place. Make sure that your family has at least two ways to exiting your home, and practice the escape plan.
“Every family member should know what the smoke alarm sounds like, and know the quickest and safest way out,” added Noble.
Part of your emergency plan should include a meeting location, located at a safe distance away from the home.
