1st Street SW Reopens Following Infrastructure Renewal Project
Medicine Hat – Beginning today, motorists will have access onto 1st Street SW, from Division Avenue S through to Chinook Drive SW, following months of construction and road closures in the area.
The project began in June and required crews from Environmental Utilities, Municipal Works and Electric Distribution in order to complete necessary work to repair and improve the aging water and sanitary lines, as well as the roadway.
“This infrastructure project was a continuation of work which was completed in 2018 and involved numerous components and a lot of important infrastructure,” said Brad Maynes, Energy & Utilities Commissioner. “The work was complex, and relied on proper coordination and work with residents in the area.”
New water and sanitary sewer mains will help to provide adequate fire protection and increased reliability services for customers. Concrete curbs and gutters were also replaced, where required, and sidewalks were enhanced to support accessibility for wheelchair users.
To minimize the impact to area residents and motorists, the work was completed in phases.
“We worked closely with residents along 1st Street SW during the entirety of this project,” said Cody Hyam, Construction Superintendent with Environmental Utilities. “This was a lengthy project and we greatly appreciated the patience they showed with the contractors and City staff.”
Minimal work will need to be completed in the spring of 2020, including completing driveway aprons, adding top lift asphalt and adding landscaping on the 100 and 200 blocks of 1 Street SW.
1st Street SW will be open to all traffic by 4:30 pm.
