New Trash Compactor On Site at Waste Management Facility

Post Date:07/08/2020 3:03 PM

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat Waste Management Facility (landfill) recently accepted delivery on a new Tana trash compactor. This capital investment provides enhanced compaction capabilities which means maximizing existing space and, ultimately, longer life at our Waste Management Facility.

Landfills are difficult and expensive to expand due to environmental regulations meant to minimize or eliminate long term impacts of burying waste. Because of this, landfill “airspace” is of great value. The compactor assists in maximizing the use of this airspace by packing as much waste material as possible into each square meter of available area.

“The compactor is the single most important piece of equipment in a landfill site,” said Jamie Garland, Manager of Solid Waste at the City of Medicine Hat. “Since it can take up to one year from order to delivery on heavy machinery like this, it was a highly anticipated and exciting day when the compactor arrived.”

Various makes and models of compactors have been used at the landfill since the equipment became standard in the industry. The new Tana compactor has features that make it unique. Two solid “packer wheel” drums, rather than the typical four, enable more waste to be packed in one pass of the machine, increasing the efficiency and reducing fuel consumption in the long run. Compaction is also anticipated to increase at least 30%, which will help save on valuable airspace.

The City of Medicine Hat accepts on average 124 million kg of materials into its Waste Management Facility annually. Only 33% of the material received ends up in the waste cell, or more commonly called “the pit,” while the rest is either beneficially used on site, recycled, or organically broken down into reusable compost.
