Fire Services Encouraging Residents to Practice Fire Safety in the Kitchen

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 to 10

Post Date:10/02/2020 11:00 AM

Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Fire Services is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”

Cooking continues to be the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in Canada.

“We know these fires are preventable,” said Scott Hanelt, Fire Marshal. “A cooking fire can grow quickly. Staying in the kitchen and remaining alert are key to preventing these fires and keeping your family safe.”

Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday, October 4 – Saturday, October 10.

Medicine Hat Fire Services is asking residents to ‘Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen’ by;

  • Staying focused on the food. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.
  • Keeping a lid nearby.
  • Keeping the cooking areas clear of clutter.
  • Helping prevent scalds and burns. Hot liquids and steam from ovens and stoves can lead to injury.
  • Keeping a kid-free zone of at least 1 meter around the stove.
