EnerGuide Ratings

The EnerGuide Rating for New Homes Incentive Program offers a rebate to encourage the construction of more energy efficient homes. The rebate amount is awarded based on the level of energy savings achieved beyond ‘a typical new home' – that is one built to the current energy code. This Program requires the services of an energy advisor.

Investments you make in energy efficiency during the construction stage can pay off in lower energy bills. Reducing a home's energy consumption by 10 gigajoules per year can reduce lifetime energy costs by about $3,000.

Rebate amount

$100 per gigajoule below the "typical new house" baseline to a maximum of $10,000.

Rebates are calculated by subtracting the Actual EnerGuide Rating and On-Site Renewable Contributions (if applicable) from the Typical New Home Baseline, then multiplying by $100.

Application deadline

Application deadline is noon on January 7, 2022.

How to participate

Determine your eligibility

Before completing any work under the program, please read the Eligibility section for incentive requirements. For instance, EnerGuide rating must be determined under the ERS v.15 rating system to qualify.

Eligibility

To qualify for a rebate under the program, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • All City of Medicine Hat residential Electric and/or Natural Gas Utility customers are eligible to apply once per residential address during the Program term.
  • This incentive program is for new residential properties.
  • EnerGuide ratings must be determined under the ERS v.15 rating system. The rebate amount awarded under this program will be determined based on the number of gigajoules achieved below the “typical new home” baseline, as determined by an energy advisor.
  • All gigajoule savings contributed through on-site renewable energy will not be included when determining the rebate amount should the Applicant also be applying for a rebate through the Solar Electric Incentive Program. If you choose to include these contributions through this Program, additional documentation will be required as outlined in the following section.

To qualify for the current year Program, the final invoice from the Energy Advisor must be paid in full and dated between January 1 and December 31 of the application year.

For more information, review the FAQ and Application Terms & Conditions sections below.

Do your research

  1. Download the Application Checklist to see what you should keep track of along the way.
  2. Visit the Natural Resources Canada website for more information about EnerGuide-rated new homes and energy efficiency for homes.
  3. Not sure how to choose a contractor? See what the Government of Alberta suggests.

Find an energy advisor

To be eligible for a rebate under this Program, your EnerGuide rating must be determined by an energy advisor under the ERS v.15 rating system. An energy advisor is an individual that has been trained and tested by Natural Resources Canada to perform all of the required modeling, testing, and associated paperwork required to obtain an EnerGuide rating.

For a list of service organizations that work with energy advisors in our community, visit the Natural Resources Canada website.
