Your property taxes support services like police, fire protection, roads, transit, parks, recreation, social services and more.

The Government of Alberta defines taxation as the process of applying a tax rate to a property's assessed value to determine the taxes payable by the owner of that property.

School declaration for tax purposes

The City of Medicine Hat is required by legislation to bill and collect taxes on behalf of the provincial government (Alberta Learning) and the Medicine Hat Catholic School District. While the City of Medicine Hat bills and collects school taxes, the municipality has no jurisdiction or control over school board budgets or operations.

School support status is reflected on your property tax and assessment notice and is shown as undeclared unless you file a declaration of school support. A change to school support does not take effect until the following calendar year.

To update your school declaration please:

  • Call Customer Service at 403-529-8111 to have a school declaration mailed to you

Manufactured homes

Manufactured homes are not registered with the Province of Alberta Land Titles Office.

It is the owner’s responsibility to report ownership changes.  In the event of ownership discrepancy, the City will make ownership changes from the most current bill of sale and in absence of that, directions from the manufactured home park.

  • If you are not using a lawyer for the purchase, you may want to purchase a Tax Certificate to be aware of the taxes that you will be assuming upon sale.  Any outstanding balance on the account becomes your responsibility.
  • If you have recently purchased or sold a manufactured home, please fill out the Manufactured/Site Built Declaration form
  • If your mailing address has changed, please provide the updated information by email tax@medicinehat.ca or call 403-529-8111.
  • If you are the owner/operator of a manufactured home community, please submit your Community Monthly Report by the 15th of each month indicating any changes.
