7 Street SW scheduled for deep utility replacement

Medicine Hat – A section of 7 Street SW will undergo deep utility replacement beginning in late-April. The 7 Street SW Deep Utility Replacement project is part of the City of Medicine Hat’s continued commitment to strategic, proactive replacement of aging infrastructure.

Beginning Monday, April 28, 2025, crews will begin to replace and rehabilitate aging water and sewer pipes to improve water supply and sanitary sewer collection. This work will ensure continued, reliable water and sewer service. It will also include a new road surface, and replace aging gas lines within the project area. Recreational infrastructure in the area will also be upgraded by the Parks and Recreation Department at the same time as this project.

The 7 Street SW Deep Utility Replacement project will be split into two phases, spanning either side of Gershaw Drive SW. There will be a brief period when work is being completed in both phases at the same time to complete trenchless pipe installation underneath Gershaw Drive.

Phase 1: April 28 to early-July (weather permitting)
The first phase is slated for east of Gershaw Drive SW, from the intersection of 4 Avenue SW to Gershaw Drive SW. This phase will be split into two work zones:
  • Zone 1 – Intersection of 7 Street and 4 Avenue SW
  • Zone 2 – 7 Street SW, between 4 Avenue and Bullivant Crescent
Phase 2: Early-June to Late-August (weather permitting)

The second phase will be on the west side of Gershaw Drive SW. It will run from Gershaw Drive, up to and including the intersection of 6 Avenue SW.

The finished project will include a rehabilitated surface, conversion of the space to one tennis court and one basketball court, fencing repairs, and lighting upgrades. Construction will begin the week of May 12, 2025, weather permitting. The project is anticipated to be completed by early July, also weather permitting.

Service effects

Traffic and pedestrian access: Gershaw Drive SW will remain open to traffic for the duration of the work, although due to the construction there may be occasional lane closures or signage for reduced speed along the roadway. There will be no front vehicle access to properties within the active work zone during construction. Lane access will be maintained. There will be pedestrian access around the active work zone during construction to maintain access to all businesses and residences. Please observe all posted detour signs and proceed with caution in the area.

Water and sewer: Water and sanitary sewer service will be maintained. Temporary above-ground water lines will be installed and tied to an exterior hose bib of each property. Short-duration scheduled outages will be required to transition properties on and off temporary water lines. Notification will be provided to residents prior to any scheduled outages.

Solid waste collection: Solid waste collection will be maintained. If your carts are collected from 7 Street SW, locate your carts in your driveway by 7 a.m. on your designated collection day, the contractor will relocate them for collection during the day and return them to your driveway by the end of the day. There will be no changes to waste collection routes for carts or bins that are collected from the rear lane.
