Annual roadway resurfacing program underway

Medicine Hat – Preliminary work has begun on the City of Medicine Hat’s annual roadway resurfacing program. Each year, select roads are planned for resurfacing in the City’s capital budget based on the priority identified within a comprehensive asset management plan.

On Monday, April 28, crews started on infrastructure repairs adjacent to the roadways targeted within this year’s program. Adjacent infrastructure includes catch basins, concrete curb and gutter, and sidewalks. Road milling and repaving will follow. This year, construction will occur at the following four locations:

Maple Avenue SE – 2 Street SE to Allowance Avenue bridges
Infrastructure repairs began April 28, with milling and paving to follow starting mid-June.

West Boundary Road – Highway 1 to Box Spring Boulevard NW
Only the northbound lanes will be resurfaced. Infrastructure repairs are expected to begin early May and last approximately one week. Paving will follow in early June.

College Avenue SE – College Drive SE to Highway 1
The roadway will be resurfaced on both the northbound and southbound lanes. Infrastructure repairs are anticipated to start early June and last approximately three weeks. Paving will follow in August.

South Boundary Road SE – Southlands Drive SE to South Ridge Drive
This work will be split into east and west work zones. The east zone will run from Southlands Drive SE to the approximate mid-point between Southlands and 13 Avenue SE. The west zone will run from Vista Drive SE up to and including the merge/turning lane west of South Ridge Drive. Milling and paving is anticipated to begin late August or early September. The work will take approximately three weeks to complete.

Two-way traffic flow will be maintained throughout each of these work zones. However, motorists should plan for delays around the work sites. For the safety of staff and the public, it is important that motorists obey all construction signage, flag personnel and temporary speed limits near these work zones.

The full roadway resurfacing program is expected to conclude by September 30. All schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.

The City of Medicine Hat would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while this vital infrastructure improvement program is completed.
