City Managing Impacts of Wind Storm
City of Medicine Hat activated it's Emergency Operations Centre Monday evening to deal with the impacts of the wind storm. Additionally, City Council's Emergency Advisory Committee declared a State of Local Emergency.
Status update as of 8:20 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 (new information in bold):
Electric
Approximately 3,400 customers are without electrical service. Power outages are currently impacting a number of City neighbourhoods, including all or portions of:
Airport area
Redcliff
Dunmore power restored
Echo Dale
Crews continue to work to restore power. Skeleton staff remain on duty to respond to emergency calls. Staff who worked throughout the day and evening have been sent home to get some rest and ensure safety standards and upheld.
Approximately 20 broken poles have been identified, numerous lines are down in multiple locations and transformers having been impacted.
As power is restored, intermittent outages may continue.
Emergency Response
All Fire crews were called to duty. Crews responded to multiple calls, including fires. Police providing support on scene as required and are responding to traffic safety issue. Crews have now gone back to regular staffing.
Roads
Crews are working to keep roads free of debris, however, roadways and pedestrian walkways may be blocked by branches and other hazards. Where debris is not being immediately removed, barricades are being erected. Navigate your route with caution. Expect traffic delays on the commute to work and school.
Parks
Trees and branches have been downed throughout the city. Do not attempt to remove or touch trees, they may have lines wrapped around them. Beware of hanging branches and maintain awareness of your environment for any hazards.
Facilities
The Big Marble Go Centre and Hockey Hounds will be closed until further notice.

Stay at least 10 metres away from any downed power lines. Do not attempt to touch or move downed trees; they may have lines wrapped around them. Beware of hanging branches and maintain awareness of your environment for any hazards.
Stay well back of emergency crews to allow them a safe area to work. If possible, the public is asked to stay home this evening to minimize road traffic. Do not touch the City's Electric Utility trucks as they may become energized during the process of repairing lines.
If your electrical service is detached from your house as a result of the storm or fallen tree, do not touch the line or get close to it. Contact the Electric Utility Department Emergency Line at 403-529-8260 to have them visit the site.
