City Councillor Jim Turner passed away suddenly Tuesday evening.

"I’ve lost a good friend and this is a tremendous loss for our entire community. We are so deeply saddened by Jim's passing," said Mayor Ted Clugston. "We hold Jim’s family in our thoughts as we come together to support the many, many people who will feel this loss deeply.”

Jim Turner served on Medicine Hat’s City Council since 2013. He was currently seeking his third term as an elected official in the upcoming municipal election. Councillor Turner held appointments on the City’s Corporate Services Committee (2013-2017), Energy and Infrastructure Committee (2018-present), and Public Services Committee (2018-present).

During his entire Council tenure, Turner represented the City on boards for the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce, the Cypress View Foundation, Economic Development Alliance, Municipal Planning Commission, and Palliser Economic Partnership. He joined the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede board in 2017. Turner also served on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board and was the City’s representative on the Highway 3 Twinning Association.

“To lose someone who devotes their time to serving others for the betterment of our community is devastating,” adds Clugston. “Jim was respected on Council and I know I speak for each of my colleagues when I say he will be terribly missed.”

Flags are at half-mast at all City facilities in honour of Councillor Jim Turner.
