City Officially Opens New Power Plant
Back to SearchMedicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat has declared its new Power Plant officially online. The new plant ensures the City will continue to own enough power supply for emergencies and to meet peak load demands, Being strategically located on the north side of the city, the new facility operates on a separate supply of natural gas and will provide back-up to the City’s largest plant.
“It is a pleasure to see this important project become a reality,” said Cal Lenz, the City’s Commissioner of Utilities. “This power supply will meet the growing needs of the City, particularly with ongoing and projected growth in the economy, new greenhouses and expanding residential areas, meaning more customers and higher demand.”
Council, media and people attending the opening ceremony had an opportunity to tour the new Power Plant including the LM6000 gas turbine generator purchased from General Electric. This is the third LM6000 unit the City has purchased since 2001, noting that this technology is a reliable, cornerstone asset of the City’s Electrical Generation supply.
Construction of this power plant contributed to the local economy over the past two years, including project management, engineering consulting and contracting services from eleven major firms and work for many other local companies that provided sub-contracting services.
In 2015, preliminary engineering, budget approvals and required permitting were completed and the project was approved. The final cost of this important project is $55.7 million, lower than the original project cost estimate of $66 million.
