Commercial Growth
October 28, 2021
When Guy Bellis, started working with Mid-West Design & Construction (Mid-West Design) two years ago, he was honored to be a part of a reputable company that is currently celebrating its 41st year in operation.
With hundreds of notable projects in and around the city of Medicine Hat, Mid-West Design’s, most recent local development, a drive-thru Starbucks adjoined to two other commercial retail units (CRU) and one other stand-alone CRU (currently available for lease), was built alongside the South Saskatchewan river on one of the busiest intersections in the city.
“Our company is currently in a major growth phase, and it’s exciting to see that we’re becoming a builder of choice for many commercial projects,” says Bellis, operations manager, Mid-West Design. “If you drive around Medicine Hat and surrounding area, there are many major commercial buildings and developments that have been built by Mid-West Design over the years”.
Mid-West Design, initially known as Mid-West Steel, first opened its doors in 1980 focusing on the sale and construction of steel products. With much success, the company expanded and opened a sister office, Southwest Design & Construction (Southwest), in Lethbridge in 1983. This eventually led to the opening of another Southwest operation in Grande Prairie, and a second Midwest Design in Calgary in 2007.
“The company’s initial focus was targeted towards the agricultural industry but as the years have gone by, commercial renovations and new design/builds have become our key area of expertise,” says Bellis. “We specialize in refacing buildings, interior and exterior renovations, and new commercial builds with any and all kinds of materials including steel, masonry block and lumber. We take pride in the work we do for new and existing local businesses and have hard-working employees at all of our offices that have been with us for many years. We would also like to thank and acknowledge all of our numerous trades and supplier partners who have been with us through all these years and contributed to our success”.
Guy expresses the company’s excitement for a large commercial development on the southside of Medicine Hat, Southlands Common, and is eager to see the opportunities made available for the community. Southlands Common is expected to break-ground before the end of the year and is strategically located beside two of the city’s newest, residential neighborhoods, Southlands and The Hamptons (link to Lansdowne story). For this project, Mid-West Design joined forces with DAAS Developments to construct four commercial buildings and put in the infrastructure for the development. This project will help to create potential new jobs and sustain local subtrades and their employees for the next 1.5-2 years.
“There is so much opportunity in Medicine Hat, not only for land development but for building upgrades and renovations, especially in the city’s historic downtown area,” says Bellis. “Medicine Hat is on the cusp of something great and we look forward to continuing great service to our clients and doing business in a way that positively influences the community.”
Mid-West Design & Construction is located at 1065 30 Street SW and can be found online at www.swmw.ca. The city’s newest Starbucks is now open and is located at 511-4th Avenue NE.
