Council Appoints Interim City Manager

Medicine Hat - City Council has approved the appointment of an interim City Manager following the announcement of Robert Nicolay’s retirement earlier this year. Former Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Merete Heggelund, who retired from the role in October of 2018, will serve in the role temporarily while Council undertakes the search for a new City Manager.

The decision was voted on at Monday’s Council meeting and received unanimous support from all members of Council. Heggelund served as CAO of the City of Medicine Hat from 2015-2018 as well as Commissioner of Corporate Services from 2012-2015 and has extensive executive experience in both municipal government and energy.

“We are so pleased to welcome Merete Heggelund to the Medicine Hat team as interim City Manager,” said Mayor Linnsie Clark. “We have a great deal of work to do and can’t afford to lose momentum, and we know that Merete will provide the strong, compassionate leadership we need to drive our organization forward while we undertake recruitment of a permanent City Manager. Welcome Merete!”

Heggelund will commence in the role on March 14 and has agreed to serve in the position until City Council has completed the full selection process for a new City Manager.
