Downtown construction project enters final phase
Medicine Hat – Work on the Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrade Project along Sixth Avenue SE and Third Street SE will resume on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The final phases of construction are anticipated to be completed by late-June 2025, weather permitting. Access to businesses will remain open downtown throughout this construction. Remaining work includes the following two sections and their corresponding upgrades:
Sixth Avenue SE
The 300 block of Sixth Avenue SE, including the intersection at Fourth Avenue SE will close April 22. Upgrades to the storm collection system and road structure on Sixth Avenue SE are needed as the road surface has reached the end of its service life. Motorists are asked to please obey all posted signage and detours in the area.
Third Street SE
Work remaining along Third Street SE includes top-lift paving, a concrete mid-block crossing, select sidewalk replacements, pavement markings, and landscaping on the 500 block. Motorists can expect to see off-street work begin in April. Work that requires road closures, including the intersection at Sixth Avenue SE, will proceed once Sixth Avenue rehabilitation is complete.
Free parking: The City is offering 20 free public parking spaces in the Transit Terminal Parkade during construction – five on the second level and 15 on the third level. The parkade will still be accessible from Fourth Avenue SE.
Transit impacts: The only impact to transit service during this construction will be the boarding location of two routes. Route 11 (NW Crescent Heights) will board where Route 22 (South Hill) regularly boards. Route 22 will board in the southeast corner of the terminal, along the adjacent alleyway. Signage will be posted on site to direct affected riders. There may be route delays when exiting the terminal during peak traffic hours - delays aren't anticipated to extend into the remaining hours of operation.

The City of Medicine Hat would like to thank residents and business owners for their patience and understanding while the remainder of work on this vital infrastructure improvement project is completed. The City looks forward to upgrading this 100-year old infrastructure to ensure a reliable utility network for decades to come.
