First Annual Clean Up Medicine Hat Event
Medicine Hat - The City of Medicine Hat Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Hat Smart will present the first annual Clean Up Medicine Hat on Saturday April 21 from 7:00am - 1:00pm. The event will focus on Poop-Pickin’ at Saamis Archeological site, Litter Blitz in the coulees, and shoreline/creek clean up. Community members are invited to register for the one day event as individuals or in groups.
The event is being held in preparation for Earth Day (Sunday, April 22), to inspire people of all ages to spend time outside, connect with nature and commit to improving the planet. “We hope to foster the current sense of ownership while creating new stewards of our land; building a community that is dedicated to conserving our environment,” said Scott Richter, Superintendent of Parks, City of Medicine Hat. Falling in line with an International Earth Day commitment to fundamentally change human attitude and behavior about plastics and end plastic pollution, the event will minimize plastic. Attendees are asked to bring a reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug.
Volunteers can participate in one of three events: Litter Blitz in the coulees and parks, poop pick up in Saamis Archeological site, and creek/shoreline clean up. Local organizations will have booths on site from 10am-1pm to engage with attendees about environmentally friendly practices. The free event will include a continental breakfast and a Mike’s Meats hot dog lunch at the Parks department (88 Kipling St SW).
History: Clean Up Medicine Hat came to life when community groups and the City collaborated to enhance three existing events: the Annual Poop Pickin’ Party, Litter Blitz and Creek Clean Up. “The three events were happening within weeks of each other, with the groups all focused on environmental sustainability; to make Medicine Hat beautiful and keep it clean. Combining the events will give volunteers and organizers an opportunity to build upon their coordinated efforts toward a more community conscious attitude for the environmental sustainability and preservation of our great city,” said Richter.
Registration is required for all of the events, deadline April 18, 2018.
