A longstanding tradition at the Art Gallery for over 20 years! This exhibition is a vibrant snapshot of the dedication and imagination of Medicine Hat’s own artists and artisans, conveyed through a wide variety of subjects, media, and techniques, from landscapes, abstraction and portraits, to vessels and sculptures. Sixty-three local artists and ceramists will be presenting works in this year’s celebration of skill, creativity and enthusiasm of members of the Hat Art Club and the Medicine Hat Potters Association.

The Medicine Hat Potters Association has advanced the artisty, craft and programs for ceramics in Medicine Hat for over 47 years. The Hat Art Club celebrates 73 amazing years of the development of members’ own artistic skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, and many other media, as well as helping the visual arts to thrive in Medicine Hat.

Terrestrial Beings

UNTIL AUGUST 3, 2019

Public Reception with the Artists & Downtown Art Walk

FRI July 12 | 7 PM

Free | Refreshments | Cash Bar | Music by Taking August

At once sublimely elegant and ruthlessly daunting, the lush intricacies of the natural world have delighted, nourished, intrigued and wrought havoc upon the human race since time immemorial. Occupying a place between reality, dream, memory and myth, Terrestrial Beings presents strange and wonderful works in which representations of the body and the land intersect physically, psychologically and metaphorically. Through sculpture, painting, drawing, and cut-paper, twelve contemporary artists from across the country embrace their connection to the earth as fertile ground for deeper spiritual and intellectual exploration.

Upcoming in the Heritage Gallery

From the Vaults

Medicine Hat has had a museum and archives for seventy years. We have had an art gallery for more than forty. In that time we have built a fantastic collection of artefacts, art and archival materials. Many of these items have good stories that connect to the history of Medicine Hat, and we use these stories to develop the exhibits. From The Vaults takes a close look at how we operate on a daily basis and explores some of the treasures from our collections that we do not often have the chance to display. It features the interesting, the odd and the unusual; items we think you would like to see!

White Gloves Night | THU July 4 | 7 PM

Are you curious about what we have in the Museum collection? How would you like to get your hands on it? Come to the Esplanade for a pint of your favourite local brew and see the From The Vaults exhibit. As part of the exhibit we will also be hosting the White Gloves Night where we will present topics from the exhibit and host behind-the-scenes tours of the Museum collections storage areas. We want to show you what you want to see! If there is something in the collection you would particularly like to see, call us at 403-502-8587 (or send us an email: museum@medicinehat.ca) ahead of time and we can have it ready for you on the evening.
