Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services celebrates 125 years of service
Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services (MHFES) will celebrate its 125th Anniversary in 2025. This milestone celebrates over a century of dedication and service to the Medicine Hat community, dating back to the formation of the first fire brigade in 1900.
“125 years of service to our community is a significant milestone,” says Chief Chad Eakins, City of Medicine Hat. “We look forward to celebrating this milestone year with the community as we honour our history and look to the future.”
Throughout the year, a series of events and exhibits will invite residents to reflect on the department’s rich history and the contributions of its past and present members.
2025 Anniversary Community Events:
- June 21, 2025 – Open House at Station 2 (1303 Trans Canada Way SE)
- September 13, 2025 – Open House at Station 1 (401 Parkview Dr NE)
- October 25, 2025 – Firefighter Gala at Co-op Place (2802 Box Springs Way NW)
In addition to these community events, an archival photo exhibit will be on display in the Esplanade lobby in the Spring showcasing historic images and moments from Medicine Hat’s fire service history.
"Like other communities, some of our city’s defining features, particularly the brick buildings in the downtown core, were shaped by devastating fires in the late 1800s and early 1900s," says Mayor Linnsie Clark. "Fortunately, over the past 125 years, there have been significant advancements in fire suppression and prevention tools, as well as fire safety legislation and education. These advancements have not only improved the safety of our residents but also help protect the health, safety, and wellness of our firefighters."
MHFES is also calling on residents to help make this celebration even more special. If residents have items related to fire service that may hold significant value or historical meaning, MHFES would like to showcase them at the open house events for the greater community. To share an item, please send a photo and brief description to fireprevention@medicinehat.ca.
