Medicine Hat Fire Services urges residents to plan escape routes during Fire Prevention Week

Medicine Hat – Medicine Hat Fire Services is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.” Fire Prevention Week runs from Sunday, Oct. 9 to Saturday, Oct. 15 in 2022.

“Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Carter Gramlich, Fire Prevention Officer.

The campaign focuses on tips to plan for fire escape.

  • Ensure you have a working smoke alarm on each level of your home and one in each bedroom.
  • Know at least two ways out of every bedroom.
  • Identify windows that are large enough to escape through and regularly test that they open easily.
  • Practice your home escape plan with everyone in the household.
  • Replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarms after 10 years.

“Our firefighters are looking forward to once again visiting local schools to deliver the important Fire Prevention Week message,” adds Gramlich. “During the pandemic, we pivoted to provide handouts for children to share with their families, but children are more eager to understand with the ability to interact and ask questions when we are right in the classroom.”
