Monthly Residential Recycling Fee To Be Implemented
Medicine Hat – The new Residential Recycling Fee will start on July 1, 2018 once all blue recycling carts have been delivered across the city. Utility customers that are part of the Residential Recycling Program can expect to see an average net cost of $2.89/month added to their utility bill.
For the implementation of the new Residential Recycling Program, residents will see a net cost increase of $2.89/month added to their utility bills. The Residential Recycling Fee will be set at $0.2075/day ($6.31/month) to fully account for all costs of the program such as contracted services provided by Can Pak Environmental, costs to purchase and maintain the blue recycling carts, and an allocation of administration costs.
The new Residential Recycling Fee is offset by fee reductions in the Waste Diversion Fee and the basic Residential Waste Collection Fee. The Waste Diversion Fee will be reduced by $0.0437/day ($1.33/month) and the Residential Waste Collection Fee will be reduced by $0.0687/day ($2.09/month). The net increase in costs to customers receiving Residential Recycling will be an average of $2.89/month ($0.0945/day).
The implementation of the Residential Recycling Fee along with associated reductions to the Waste Diversion Fee and the Residential Waste Collection Fee meets City Council’s mandate of providing the residential recycling service to residents at or below a net cost of $6 per month. Although the monthly average cost of the Residential Recycling fee will be $6.31/month, residents will only see an average net increase of $2.89/month across the three solid waste charges on their utility bills.

Glass may be deposited at one of the bulk recycling depots. Blue recycling cart collection will remain on the same day and in the same set out location as the grey and yard waste carts; ensure all carts are set out by 7am.
