Neat to Know: February 6, 2024
Thanks for reading Neat to Know, a weekly roundup of City news, updates, and other important information. You can expect to see the week's most interesting content and even some that may have not been delivered through our regular channels.
Energy bills and conservation
We tend to hear a lot of community chatter about high utility bills each January and July, when consumption is highest. While we are currently enjoying interim wholesale commodity pricing (read more about that here), our bills are still impacted by extreme weather. These are the times when concentrating on small energy-saving adjustments can really make a difference. This page on our website provides conservation and energy-efficiency tips for all seasons.
Another consideration for January bills, in particular, is that new rates for sewer, garbage and recycling, and water also come into effect on January 1. Rate bylaws are passed each December by City Council. Here is a roundup of all the rates, fees and chargers for Medicine Hat utilities.
HAT Smart
We just launched the popular HAT Smart residential incentive program to assist with the cost of making energy-conscious home upgrades. Funding is typically fully reserved by early spring, so if you plan to consider those new windows, or adding insulation, now is the time to check out the HAT Smart website and reserve your funds.
Don't toss pressurized tanks or cylinders
Fire extinguishers, propane tanks, bottles, and small compressed gas containers, such as party helium tanks and cylinders for camp stoves, pose a serious risk of explosion and fire if improperly disposed of due to their pressurized nature.
To reduce the risk of injury or property damage, please bring these items to the City's Waste Management Facility for safe and proper disposal.
