Land Use Bylaw refresh – new timeline to incorporate feedback

Since the City of Medicine Hat posted its Land Use Bylaw refresh draft document on its Shape Your City site in April 2025, staff have received regular public and stakeholder feedback on land use matters. Ensuring this feedback is addressed in a meaningful manner is a high priority for staff overseeing this process.

As feedback has been received, staff have made the assessment that more engagement is necessary to capture and address this additional feedback. The Land Use Bylaw refresh project timeline will require adjustment to provide enough time to properly undertake this engagement.

Staff are preparing a revised project plan with an updated timeline and communications plan.

We will provide the updated timeline and more information on this project once it’s available.

Local government 101

Municipal scope and funding

We’ve mentioned before that it is important to understand the various levels of government and their distinct roles as we prepare for the upcoming municipal elections.

Your municipal government, the City of Medicine Hat, handles services within the city’s municipal boundaries and our powers are determined by the provincial government, in this case Alberta's Municipal Government Act.

The City is funded by:

  • Property taxes: The primary source of municipal revenue.
  • User fees and rates: For services like water, garbage collection, parking, and recreation.
  • Grants and transfers: From provincial/federal governments for infrastructure, transit, and other projects.
  • Licensing and fines: Business licenses, bylaw infractions, etc.

Trash talk: by the numbers

When you actually add it up, the numbers relating to waste and recycling in one year are quite impressive. Here are some statistics from our Environmental Utilities crews for 2024:

  • 1,743,979 carts emptied
  • 48,960 vehicles entered the Waste Management Facility (Landfill)
  • 20,000 kg of free compost provided (approximately) during two compost giveaway events; the compost is produced from the organic materials collected in the seasonal yard waste collection program
  • 101,934.3 kg of compressed natural gas (CNG) used, reducing approximately 376,757 kg of CO₂ emissions when compared to diesel waste collection vehicles. That’s equivalent to taking 84 passenger vehicles off the road for one year in Canada!

You can find cool stats like this all over our 2024 Annual Report.
