Winter is coming; so is the end of the construction season

The 2024 road construction season is wrapping up in Medicine Hat. Several significant projects are nearly complete, with others nearing the finish line when work resumes in spring 2025.

3 Street Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrades

The 3 Street SE Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrades project is rapidly nearing completion. The last bit of work needing to be completed prior to winter is the concrete boulevards and pedestrian ramps. This work is being completed this week. The 6 Avenue SE intersection is expected to open by the end of this week on temporary traffic control (stop signs), while the 500 block is expected to open by early next week. Crews will be back briefly in spring 2025 to perform top lift paving on the 500 block of 3 Street SE, when suitable weather is available.

Division Avenue S Rehabilitation

Construction on the Division Avenue S Rehabilitation project is wrapping up for 2024 later this month. Work between 6 Street SE and 7 Street SE is anticipated to be completed by Friday, November 22. Division Avenue S will reopen to motorists for the winter. Due to the caution taken to protect critical underground infrastructure, and weather-related events, Division Avenue S between 7 Street SE and 11 Street SW will be completed in 2025. Crews will return as soon as possible in the spring, with work expected to last approximately two months, weather permitting.

8 Street SE Water and Sewer Rehabilitation

The 8 Street SE Water and Sewer Rehabilitation project is wrapping up. The road has been paved, but some landscaping and concrete sidewalks, driveways, and boulevards still need to be completed along the 300 block of 8 Street SE. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed within the next week.

7 Street NW and Altawana Drive Deep Utility Replacement

The completion of the 7 Street NW and Altawana Drive Deep Utility Replacement project is near; the contractor is finishing concrete and asphalt roadwork this week. All new underground infrastructure is installed and in service. Final paving of 7 Street from Altawana Drive to McCutcheon Drive NW is anticipated for this weekend, and the road is set to be opened after paving has been completed.

Bird was the word

The Bird scooter and bike rental season wrapped up November 1, with the equipment getting picked up for the winter.

Hatters got a lot of use on these scooters and bikes in 2024.

This season, they travelled 63,000 kilometres!

That’s over one-and-a-half times around the earth and an average of nearly one kilometre per resident!

Weather permitting, Bird will bring back the scooters and bikes in April 2025 for the start of another great season.
