New Capital Project, Road Closures maps enhance user experience

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat has updated its interactive Capital Project Map and its Road Construction and Closures Map for the 2025 construction season. The updates enhance each map’s interactive features to improve clarity through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. In turn, this provides more information about current and upcoming projects and closures occurring around the community.

Capital Project Map

The purpose of this map is to inform residents of approved capital projects in Medicine Hat for 2025. Projects from all four City of Medicine Hat Divisions are represented on the map. These do not account for the entire list of approved capital projects – only those with notable closures or service disruptions have been selected. Each project on the map includes a brief description, planned and actual timelines, approved project cost, and contact information for those wanting to learn more.

New for 2025
In this new map, projects will be better highlighted once selected, and include a more viewable project window to show the exact location and scope of this work. Users will also be able to choose between project type, planned and actual start dates, project phase, and more on the left-hand side of the dashboard.

“The new map has benefits both internally and externally,” said Pat Bohan, Managing Director of the Development & Infrastructure Division. “Internally, it allows all departments to plot their projects themselves, and see what other departments have input, enhancing our ability to capitalize on synergies to reduce impact to the public. Externally, the community has a much broader view of the work with a new dashboard and these upgraded filtering tools.”

The original interactive project map launched in 2021 to better inform residents of upcoming, in-progress and completed construction projects. This new map is focused on providing information about large projects that are likely to impact or disrupt regular day-to-day functions of residents.

“If, for instance, our work will disrupt traffic or close a public amenity for an extended period, it will be on the map. Work on a lift station that is off the beaten path, or unplanned short-duration closures of trails and roads, will not,” added Bohan.

Please note, this map does not indicate which roads, sidewalks or trails are currently closed for construction, events, or other traffic accommodation purposes. This information is represented on the Road Construction and Closures map.

Road Construction and Closures Map

The purpose of this map is to inform residents of closures on roads, sidewalks, and trails in Medicine Hat. This map represents closures for more initiatives than just capital projects. Therefore, minimal information on closures for capital projects have been provided. View our Capital Projects Map for more information on current and upcoming capital projects in 2025.

New for 2025
A dashboard on the right-hand side of the map has been added to maximize clarity on closure types. Users will also be able to view which closures are active and which are upcoming to better plan their commutes accordingly. And, similarly to the Capital Projects Map, closures will be better highlighted once selected, and include a more viewable window to show the exact location, scope, and timeline of closures.

The City will be encouraging users to submit feedback in the fall, near or after the end of the 2025 construction season, to determine how best to meet residents' needs.
