New Home for Tulips

Nicole McNaughton grew up observing her mother decorate their home with trendy décor and materials like faux flowers, while her stepmother owned and ran a flower shop in Calgary.

When McNaughton turned 30, she grew tired of working in an office for the oilfield industry and opened Tilted Tulip, a flower shop, in her garage in 2018.

“My storefront for the first three and a half years was Instagram and Facebook,” says McNaughton, who lives in Medicine Hat. “I’m a huge fan of this community, because word of mouth is really what got this business going. It’s crazy how fast we got busy.”

In 2021, McNaughton signed a lease to move her business into a storefront in downtown Medicine Hat. The 400 square foot space will accommodate the floral arrangements she makes for weddings, banquets, funerals and other celebratory events. McNaughton also makes home décor arrangements with craft materials and permanent botanicals.

“The downtown is absolutely beautiful. The city has done so much work and it really has drawn more business down here,” says McNaughton. “The downtown businesses are so big on supporting each other. It really is its own little community down here.”

McNaughton says her online followers have voiced their excitement for Tilted Tulip to have its own storefront.

“When I opened originally, I really learned as I went,” says McNaughton. “I reached out a lot to my followers and would ask what they liked and what they didn’t, what they wanted for florals and arrangements and what they didn’t. I really can’t say good enough things about the people here.”

The space Tilted Tulip now resides in is another one of Medicine Hat’s historic buildings that has been renovated and revitalized, this one through Kolab.

“Kole Dalgleish, who owns the building, has really encouraged me to take this next step, and I am very grateful for her,” says McNaughton.

McNaughton looks forward to this new journey with her business and can be found online at or in person at 555 2nd Street downtown.
